TechCrunch released an article about a start-up Whatser, the location-based service that lets users share their favorite locations with friends and discover new ones along the way. Of note, how they want to help their customers reward its customers via loyalty - not price slashing Groupon deals.
What do you think?

Have you taken advantage of coupon systems such as Groupon to drive business to your restaurant this past year? It's been a challenge for the restaurant industry to keep customers coming in while we have feature articles touting ways to save money.
One of those primary ways recommended to save money? Stay home and don't eat out. Ouch! That hurts. Not only does it hurt the bottom line of the restaurant owner, but it also hurts the thousands of people employed by the hospitality industry (e.g., waiters, kitchen staff, cooks, etc.)
In an effort to combat the "stay home" philosophy, many restaurant owners have engaged with discounting systems such as Groupon or other local providers. The hope is that you bring the customers in with the discount and they either buy more or establish themselves as regulars and come back again and again. Unfortunately, many people have gotten "hooked" on the discounts and won't dine out without a coupon in hand.
Here's a great article from the LA Times discussing the discount craze problem for restaurants. What's your plan for 2011? Are you going to start scaling back the coupons and engaging your customers with other strategies?
We are looking forward to 2011 and seeing how this concept evolves.

Lunch Specials, Happy Hours, Weekend Events, Oh My!
Most everyone has a favorite restaurant that they frequent. For example, if you were a huge fan of the Kooky Canuck (@kookycanuck) in downtown Memphis, you would want to know what they had going on this week. When is the next “red carpet” event, what are the lunch specials and when you can get the best price on a cold one. Or if you enjoy the inspiring cuisine at Circa (@circamemphis) downtown, you might want to know what they have going on for Valentine’s Day. Both of these restaurants implement social media to get the word out. Although they had a great following before they started social media, they have become a force on facebook and twitter.
Restaurants can use many different types of social media other than Facebook and Twitter. As we have explained in the previous blog, Yelp, UrbanSpoon and CitySearch are great interactive directories. YouTube can also be used when you have exciting events at your restaurant or just to show a virtual tour of the experience customers will have when they dine in your establishments. You can also utilize sites like eventful.com and upcoming.org to promote events you are hosting at your restaurants.
Social Media is a great and cheap tool to employ when promoting and marketing your website and restaurant.

Sure, there are tons of restaurant directories out there. So many it might make your head spin. That’s why we are going to break it down for you and give you some tips as to what directories are worth a darn.
- Yelp: (According to Compete.com) In November 2009, Yelp had over 27 million people getting directions and reviews to restaurants, shops and more. With so many people utilizing the service, you really can’t go wrong. Another plus to Yelp is their iPhone and smart phone application that customers can use on the go. Yelp has different pages for each city and is geared mostly towards people looking for restaurants, although they do have directories for stores, spas, and nightplaces.
- CitySearch: City Search, similar to Yelp, has a custom page for different cities. However, it is used for all types of directories, not mainly restaurants. Don’t write CitySearch off just yet, though. The still brought in almost 24 million visitors in November 2009 alone. This means you have a good chance of catching some of those visitors and keeping them for your very own.
- UrbanSpoon: People are on their phones ALL THE TIME. UrbanSpoon is wildly popular with smart phone and iPhone users and that should be reason enough to take the 2 minutes it takes to add a restaurant. Since it is a site created for only restaurants and bars, this is the perfect outlet to get involved with as a restaurant owner/manager.
Remember, when enlisting in these directories be sure to keep an eye on the reviews. This can give you an insiders ear to what people think about your restaurant. Also, you get the chance to right a wrong. If someone is trashing your restaurant, publicly offer them a discount or gift card to make up for it. People will see you are concerned and involved in the opinions of your patrons.

So many people use Yelp, CitySearch and other local restaurant directories these days, why on earth would you need a separate site?
Well for starters, a lot of people use directories to find websites for restaurants, not just the location themselves. A website is the face of your business. Many potential customers will expect you to have one, and a good looking one at that. Putting effort into website design and the content shows your customers you strive for excellence. In your food, in your customer service and in your website.
Don’t tell me you haven’t seen a hideous website for a restaurant that made you think twice about eating there.
This does not mean you shouldn’t invest some time in listing your business on restaurant directories. This is a great Internet Marketing tool that goes hand in hand with your website. Monitor the reviews and learn from the comments people leave.

FourSquare is a game of social adventures. Users check into locations in hopes of becoming the mayor (the person that visits the location the most) and to accumulate badges. Recently, FourSquare reported that a restaurant called AJ Bombers in Milwaukee increased their Sunday business by 110% by promoting the Swarm Badge (having 50+ people checked in to one location at a time) at SXSW, a popular interactive conference. The restaurant brought 161 visitors to the restaurant at once. Let’s just say the Wisconsin burger joint was hoppin'!
You can use Twitter or Facebook to challenge people to acquire a Swarm Badge one particular night, or you can urge FourSquare users to come in and try to overthrow the current mayor, who has been mayor for too long. Offer a discount as an incentive for people to try to become the newest mayor. Everyone loves a game. Why not increase your sales at the same time?
